Graeme Willy (Pegg) and Clive Gollings (Frost) are two science fiction fans travelling across America’s UFO heartland in a rented RV to attend Comic-Con; they stop at a roadside diner where Ruth Buggs (Kristen Wiig), an unappreciative waitress with religious beliefs that aliens created humans, works. She sneezes into Graeme’s face while taking his orderufffdanother customer had earlier purposely done so as part of a viral marketing campaign for Paulufffdand he falls instantly in love with her. Later that night whilst sleeping in their car outside Roswell they are awakened by bright flashing lights outside; upon investigating they encounter Paul (Rogen). He is an alien who has crash landed on Earth after escaping from government capture during a UFO incident 50 years previously at Roswell; he asks for their help to reach Area 51 so he can return home via the mothership waiting there for him. Despite initially trying to contact the Pentagon about Paul’s arrival it quickly becomes apparent that Zoil will not let anyone else take credit for capturing Paul so orders his men to hunt down Graeme and Clive instead; this forces them all to go on the run together pursued by federal agents including Agent Lorenzo Zoil (Tambor). Along the way they are joined by Ruth’s fundamentalist Christian father Moses Buggs (John Carroll Lynch), who has been left behind when she sets off unexpectedly with Graeme & Clive without telling him about it first despite having promised she would stay with him until her mother recovered from cancer surgery which happened sooner than expected leaving Moses feeling abandoned yet again as Ruth had also recently moved away from home against his wishes thereby further exacerbating their strained relationship…
