What is Downton Abbey?
Downton Abbey is a British historical drama television series set in the early 20th century, created and co-written by Julian Fellowes. The series first aired on ITV in the United Kingdom on 26 September 2010, and in the United States on PBS, which supported production of the series as part of its Masterpiece Classic anthology, on 9 January 2011.
The Plot of the Downton Abbey Movie
The film begins in 1927, a few months after the Crawleys hosted a royal visit from King George V and Queen Mary. Lady Mary is in London working on her husband’s estate while pregnant with their first child. Ms. Baxter, one of Lady Mary’s former maids, is revealed to have been diagnosed with tuberculosis and is living in a sanitarium. Shortly after Ms. Baxter leaves Downton Abbey, Lady Mary visits her in the sanitarium and Ms. Baxter reveals that she was raped by Mr. Green, Lady Mary’s former valet who was killed by Mr. Bates after he raped Anna Bates. This revelation leads to Lady Mary suffering a nervous breakdown and she returns to Downton Abbey.
The Cast of the Downton Abbey Movie
The Downton Abbey movie follows the Crawley family and their loyal staff as they prepare for a visit from the King and Queen of England. The cast of the movie includes the original stars from the hit TV show, plus some new faces. Here’s a look at who’s who in the Downton Abbey movie.
Michelle Dockery returns as Lady Mary Crawley, the eldest daughter of Robert and Cora Crawley. Lady Mary is now a mother herself and has taken over her late husband’s estate, Downton Abbey.

The Locations of the Downton Abbey Movie
The filmed locations for the Downton Abbey movie were largely concentrated in and around the village of Bampton in Oxfordshire, England. Bampton was used for many exterior shots of the village of Downton, as well as for some interior shots, including the kitchen and servants’ quarters of Downton Abbey.
Some other locations used in the filming of the movie included Herstmonceux Castle in East Sussex, which served as a stand-in for Brancaster Castle; Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire, which was used for filmings at Downton Abbey; and Thorpe Park in Surrey, which was used for a scene set at a fairground.
The Costumes of the Downton Abbey Movie
Designing the costumes for a period drama like Downton Abbey is no small feat. To ensure historical accuracy, the costume designers need to do extensive research into the fashion of the time period. For the Downton Abbey movie, which is set in 1927, the designers looked to real-life aristocrats and examined photographs and paintings from the era to get a sense of what people actually wore.
Once they had an understanding of the fashion of the time period, they set about creating hundreds of unique costumes for the cast. While some of the clothes were made specifically for the movie, others were sourced from vintage clothing stores and private collectors.
If you’re a fan of costume dramas, then you’ll definitely want to check out the Downton Abbey movie. Even if you’re not familiar with the TV show, you’ll appreciate the beautiful costumes on display.
The Music of the Downton Abbey Movie
The highly anticipated “Downton Abbey” movie was released in September, and while it wasn’t able to recapture the magic of the Emmy-winning show, it did feature one of the best things about the series: its music.
“Downton Abbey” has always had great music, from the stately classical pieces that heralded the arrival of Lady Mary and Lady Edith to Lady Rose’s scandalous jazz piano performances. The film is no different, with a mix of new and old songs that are both moving and appropriate for the era.
Some of the standout tracks include a beautiful rendition of “Abide with Me,” which is used to underscore a touching moment between Lady Mary and Matthew Crawley; a jubilant performance of “Auld Lang Syne” as the family celebrates New Year’s Eve; and a stirring rendition of “My Love Is Like a Red, Red Rose” by none other than Dame Maggie Smith.
If you’re a fan of the “Downton Abbey” soundtrack, you can find it on Spotify or iTunes. And if you want to relive some of your favorite moments from the show, all six seasons are currently streaming on Netflix.
