What is homesickness?
Homesickness is the feeling of longing for home while away from it. It’s often accompanied by feelings of sadness, anxiety, and nostalgia. Homesickness is a common experience, especially among students who are away from home for the first time. There are many ways to cope with homesickness, including staying busy, staying in touch with loved ones, and exploring your new surroundings.
Causes of homesickness
There are many different causes of homesickness. It can be caused by a change in environment, such as starting college or moving to a new city. It can also be caused by a change in routine, such as going on vacation or taking a long trip. And it can even be caused by a change in the people you’re around, such as spending time with family or friends who live far away. Whatever the cause, homesickness is a very real and very common feeling.
There are several different theories about what causes homesickness. One theory is that it’s simply a matter of missing the comforts of home, such as your bed, your favorite food, or your cat. Another theory is that homesickness is actually a form of anxiety brought on by being in an unfamiliar place. This theory makes sense when you consider that many of the symptoms of homesickness (such as anxiety, sadness, and difficulty sleeping) are also symptoms of anxiety disorders.
Whatever the cause, there are some things you can do to ease the symptoms of homesickness. First, try to stay busy and distracted with activities and socializing. Second, make sure you keep up with your usual routines as much as possible (even if they have to be modified slightly). And finally, reach out to your loved ones back home for support and reassurance.

How to deal with homesickness
It’s normal to feel a bit homesick when you first move away from home, whether you’re going to college, university or just starting a new job. Homesickness is usually caused by feeling anxious or stressed about being in a new place where you don’t know anyone.
There are lots of things you can do to help yourself feel better if you’re homesick:
1) Stay in touch with your family and friends back home. A quick chat on the phone or video call will help you feel connected to the people and places you love.
2) Make an effort to meet new people and socialise as much as possible. Join a club or society, go to student events and explore your new town or city. The more people you meet, the more likely you are to find friends who make you feel at home.
3) Keep yourself busy! Don’t spend too much time alone in your room thinking about home ufffd get out there and see what your new surroundings have to offer. There’s so much to discover!
4) Write down how you’re feeling in a journal or blog ufffd it can be really therapeutic to get your thoughts and feelings out of your head and down on paper (or screen!). Sometimes just putting words to how we’re feeling can help us make sense of it all and start to feel better.
5) Seek professional help if your homesickness is really affecting your day-to-day life ufffd there’s no shame in admitting that you need some extra support, and speaking to a counsellor or therapist could make all the difference.
If homesickness is starting to take over, remember that it’s only temporary ufffd eventually, you’ll settle into your new life and start making memories that will last a lifetime!
When to seek help for homesickness
If you’re finding it hard to cope with homesickness, there are a few things you can do to make things easier. First, try to stay busy and occupied. Keeping yourself busy will help take your mind off of missing home. Secondly, reach out to friends and family members who live far away. Talking to them can help make you feel closer to home. Lastly, if you’re still struggling, don’t be afraid to seek professional help. A counselor or therapist can offer additional support and resources for dealing with homesickness.
Prevention of homesickness
It is important to prevent homesickness before it starts. Some ways to do this include:
1) Staying in touch with home. Write letters, call often, and send photos and email regularly.
2) Finding things to do that make you feel at home. If you’re from a big city, try to find an urban area in your new location. If you love the outdoors, look for activities that allow you to enjoy nature.
3) Keeping a positive outlook and staying busy. Focus on the good things about your new situation and keep yourself occupied with work, school or hobbies.
