Cast

Van Helsing is a 2004 American action horror film directed by Stephen Sommers. It stars Hugh Jackman as the eponymous main character, a vampire hunter who battles Count Dracula (played by Richard Roxburgh) and his brides (including Kate Beckinsale as Anna Valerious). The film also features David Wenham, Shuler Hensley, Will Kemp, Kevin J. O’Connor, Alun Armstrong, Tom Fisher, and Silvia Colloca.

The title character was inspired by the Dutch book Van Helsing’s Monster Hunter Club series by Bram Stoker Award-winning author Tim Waggoner. The film is an homage and tribute to the Universal Monsters franchise of films from the 1930s and 1940s (particularly those featuring Dracula), of which Sommers is a fan.

The plot revolves around Valerious seeking revenge on Draculas castle in Transylvania for the death of her father while van Helsing tries to stop him before he can bring about the apocalypse using five mystical stones that representthe five phases of the moon. He is joined in this quest by Carl (an expert in ancient lore), Velkan (a werewolf), and Anna (a descendant of Abraham Van Helsing).

Dracula has enslaved most of the villagers in order to build an army with which he intends to take over the world but when they discover his true identity they turn against him. After defeating Dracula’s minions including Frankenstein’s monster and Mr Hyde, van Helsing finally confronts Dracula himself but not before Velkan sacrifices himself to save Anna. She then gives van Helsing a magic stake which kills Dracula just as dawn breaks. With no one left to revive him, Dracula disintegrates into dust and finally dies. In a post-credits scene it is revealed that Mr Hyde has survived his fall and escaped back into London where he resumes terrorizing its citizens
